The annual science fiction and fantasy convention
March 31 – April 1, 2010
Tel Aviv, Israel
The 2010 Olamot.Con Sci-Fi and Fantasy Convention was held in Tel Aviv during the Passover holiday. Olamot.Con is one of the largest conventions in Israel. It receives extensive media coverage and attracts thousands of participants each year. Olamot.Con is a red-letter day for fans of the science fiction and fantasy (both literature and cinema), and its 2-day diverse program attracts people of all ages.
This year's convention consiseed of more than 100 events, including lectures, panel discussions, contests, professional workshops, shows, filking and special screenings (including movies' and series' premieres), celebrating science fiction and fantasy fandom.
Olamot.Con is produced by non-for-profit organizations that work all year long to promote fandom and creators of science fiction and fantasy, and strive to make them more accessible to our audience. As a result, Olamot.Con featured mainly new content items (TV shows and films) that are not otherwise accessible to the Israeli public. We take pride in providing the stage to independent filmmakers and young authors.
Olamot.Con is a seminal cultural event, made possible due to the passion and hard work of dozens of volunteers, from the convention director to the last but not least staff member. Their only reward is the convention itself as all incomes are used to pay for the facilities and cover expenses.
This year's convention focused on magical creatures, super-heroes and the paranormal. Among other things, we explored strange phenomena from a scientific point of view and refute some well-established myths. Dozens of participants from both the academic and fandom community took part in this year's celebration, which included 4 theaters running shows all day long.
Convention participants enjoyed a huge fair of science fiction and fantasy merchandise (books, props, action figures, DVD's etc.) The convention also held a short stories contest, trivia games and other interactive activities, both during the convention and online.
About the organizers:
The Israeli Society for Science Fiction and Fantasy
Founded in 1996, its main goal is to promote Science Fiction and Fantasy in Israel, and it has been continuously active ever since. So far its activities have included conventions, lectures on fantasy, science fiction and general science topics, premiere screenings of SF&F films, SF&F story-writing contests and much more. The society publishes an annual printed magazine and an online magazine. The society is a non-for-profit organization, and all its activities are undertaken by volunteers.
The Israeli Tolkien Society represents a large community of Hebrew-speaking fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and his work, who engage in common activities. Among their diverse activities are the development of websites, conferences, social gatherings and events, hikes, advanced research about Tolkien's works and the development of online forums.
The goal of this community is to study Tolkien's works as well as spread the love and appreciation of these works among the Israeli public. Another important goal is to provide information and research in Hebrew that will enrich those readers who wish to learn more, and to promote the study of Tolkien and his works in Israeli universities.
